Great improvement, but not yet perfect
Used this for the first time Jan-Apr and God has worked undoubtedly been at work as we've explored Mark's gospel with the help of the course.
The new videos are a great improvement, but some of the bible-studies in the handbook are disappointing. There were at least two we had to significantly rewrite - to keep them focused on the passage's main issues.
The Psalm in session 2 is potentially a red-herring as the entire session relies on an assumption about how well the disciples new the psalm - not convinced we can only study the calming of the storm with that in mind (put it this way, my group this time, with at least one ESOL candidate) struggled.
The Zechariah question in session 5 is a distraction as well.
CE is built on the presupposition (a reasonable one ) that Mark's gospel is basically a justification of Mark 1:1. Therefore its actually unhelpful to jump around the bible to answer questions...It might be useful for a more advanced group but this is a course for beginners.
If I were to make one broad criticism of CE its that its written for degree-educated people. The complexity of some of the bible study questions (which are packed with clauses and subclauses) makes it hard to use "off the shelf" with people who aren't fantastic readers already. If only the course authors had done the Good Book Company's GROWTH GROUPS course before writing some of the bible-study questions!!!!
These niggles aside - we really like it!!! Praise God for the new videos! ![]()
An excellent revision of a great course
This shortened course was much easier to fit into the busy lifestyle of those who attended. The professional production of the DVD was impressive and along with the workbook the course kept the attention of everyone. Our participants all read through Mark's gospel and came to a greater appreciation of their need of Christ. ![]()
