Description

Ask the average person about women from the Old Testament and they will probably imagine that these ancient documents have little to say. After all, doesn't the Bible come from an age in which women were totally repressed? In fact, until recently, hasn't the Bible itself been responsible for keeping women down?

If these are opinions that you share or have come across, then this Good Book Guide will give you a totally different view of the Bible. It examines the lives and experiences of seven women from ancient Israel, highlighting their flaws and their faith, their struggles and solutions. Women who were wives, mothers and worshippers of God — from a pagan prostitute to a prophetess waging war.

Through the lives of these women we learn about God, ourselves, the great problem with this world, and what God is doing about it. This is not just a history course — these stories could change your life!

Other information

The Good Book Guides have been developed to ensure that each session not only seeks to uncover the meaning of the passage and see how it fits into the big picture of the Bible, but also leads people to apply what they have learnt to their lives. Flexible and practical, the Good Book Guides are ideal for small groups, or individual study.

"The format is very user-friendly and the content is rich and accessible."
- Justin Taylor, Gospel Coalition blogger and Vice-President of Editorial, Crossway

"God-centered, application-oriented, and driven by the text throughout, this resource is a gift to God’s church."
- Matt Smethurst, Gospel Coalition reviewer and Master of Divinity student at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

Here at Covenant Life Church, we have greatly benefitted from the small group resources from The Good Book Company. Many small groups in our family life ministry have used "Colossians: Confident Christianity" in their study of scripture. Additionally, our youth ministry has used "Romans 1-5: God and You" in their small groups. Both resources were very easy to use, helped the reader engage directly with the scriptures, and had a wonderful pastoral emphasis demonstrated in all the questions.
- Dave Brewer, Youth Pastor at Covenant Life Church, Maryland

“Thought provoking”

Started a women’s Bible study. I am using this book as the basis of our studies. We don’t cover every question in the sessions as we wouldn’t have time but I look at them all so can draw on them and we have great discussions.

“Plenty to think about”

I’m part of a zoom Bible study group and ‘Women of Faith’ is proving suitable for a mix of Christian experience, although I feel it makes a difference that some of the group have in-depth Bible knowledge as this contributes immensely to the discussions in answer to the questions posed. Without this, some answers may just be ‘two dimensional. While there aren’t ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ answers, there are leaders notes tucked away at the book of the book to help the discussions along. This also means that in our group we can share the leading of different sessions. With our group, we’ve found allowing two evenings of study (each evening is 80 minutes maximum, ie two free zoom sessions!) has helped us not to rush things, allows us time to read out loud the Bible passages, while still leaving ‘homework’ to consider the more personal questions.
Of the studies themselves, focussing on women is both interesting and challenging, and offers different perspectives on passages we may already be familiar with.

“Women of Faith in the O.T.”

This looks an excellent study book which we are planning to use with our ladies group in the New Year.I like the way the studies are set out, with questions which are relative to the passage. I also like the "explore more" questions which compare other scriptures with the same theme, because they add extra insight into the passage being studied. The leaders' notes at the end offer a good back up and clearly explain the point of each question. I shall look forward to starting it in January. Beryl.

“Women of Faith from the old testament”

Very good to help us study these ladies of faith. We are only on the third character. There is a wrong reference in study no 2, question 6 should read Genesis 18 v 1-15.

Thanks Jenny! We'll get that reference fixed in the next reprint. Glad you enjoyed the study.

“recommendable”

This book is easy to use and has something to say to all levels of spiritual maturity. It is especially relevant in these times of confusion and contradiction regarding gender rôles. Good for groups. I wish it included women of faith from the New Testament as well. The font size is uncomfortably small.

Hi JJ,
Have a look at Meeting Jesus (www.thegoodbook.co.uk/products/gmj). This is the New Testament equivalent.
Sorry you find the font size too small. I'll mention that to the editorial team.
Thanks for your feedback!

“Good discussion material”

Used this book with a group of young mums, mostly young in faith. All found it a useful introduction to familiar and not so familiar Bible characters. Provoked good discussion. This is a series of books I had not seen before but would certainly use again.

“A good study ”

We found this a deeper study than we expected. Our house group consists of 10people at the moment. Most of us have been in the same house group and church for many years and so are an experienced group.
It has been refreshing to look at these women of faith in a different way; the questions have truly been thought provoking. A study that is interesting for beginners and equally good for groups like us who have enjoyed going deeper.

“Excellent study”

Our entire Womens' group of 30+ has studied this as it is so good. Really penetrating questions, and lots of thought provoking material. There is also NT one I am told.

“Excellent”

I have used this in my quiet times and with a women's daytime bible study group. The questions are really helpful (we haven't changed them to suit our group as not needed), they are hard hitting in application and point each time to God's amazing grace. We split each study in 2 as so much to cover each time. Thank you Mary for writing insightful questions that bring heart searching moments and fix our eyes on God's goodness. If you want studies that help women and get good application conversations going, please use these.
