Description

The world tells single women that they most need to find a guy, at least for a night. The church often seems to suggest they most need a husband. Is it really possible to be a single Christian woman and be satisfied?

Andrea Trevenna takes readers to the heart of singleness—to what our hearts need, how they feel, and the ways they can be deceived. She shows that there is a way for singleness not to be at best a quiet regret, and at worst a personal tragedy. She points to the ultimate, and only, place where anyone, single or married, finds true satisfaction—knowing, and enjoying knowing, Christ.

If you are a single woman, whatever your experience of life so far, or if you are a friend of someone who is single, then this short, warm, realistic book is for you.

Carrie Sandom

Director of Women's Ministry, The Proclamation Trust

Andrea’s honesty, humour and wisdom will challenge the way you think, warm your heart, and nourish your soul—which is exactly what happened when I read this book. This is not just for single women; everyone should read it to understand the pressures on single women, the mistakes others can make, and how church families can be truly encouraging. Worth the asking price for chapter seven alone.

Carrie Sandom

Director of Women's Ministry, The Proclamation Trust

We live in a sex-obsessed society so the notion of single women living fulfilled, joyful and celibate lives is totally counter-cultural, and hugely challenging. Andrea encourages us to take God’s word seriously and meet that challenge head on. But this book is not just for single women. Everyone should read it to understand the pressures on single women today, the mistakes married people often make when talking to them, and the help church families can be in encouraging them to be godly. Worth the asking price for chapter seven alone, Andrea’s honesty, humour and wisdom will challenge the way you think, warm your heart and nourish your soul—which is exactly what happened when I read it.

THE most helpful and biblical book I have read on singleness. Most others made me mad or sad, but this made me rejoice. Andrea helps us lift our eyes from our situation and gaze upon Jesus, who loves us and delights in us.

EQUIP shorts: 'The Heart of Singleness'

Ruth Schroeter, Equip Book Club, May 4, 2015

The Heart of Singleness by Andrea Trevenna speaks sensitively and practically into a topic that can dominate our thought life, swamp our prayer life and hinder our ability to actually live the life God has prepared for us.... continue reading

Unwanted Gift?

Rosie Dunn, Evangelicals Now

It is no smug self-help book, presenting the ideal but unattainable perfect single life. Andrea’s honesty reassures us that she really does understand our situation and she shows us that it’s only when we get our hearts right that we can truly be content.

A great strength of the book is that when you put it down you feel as if you’ve had a chat with the author (over tea and cake or a glass of wine!) – the warm and funny style makes it very readable.... continue reading

“Best book on how to really find love”

Very readable! I have been married for 36 years. This book speaks to me as well as to my Thirtysomething daughter who is single. We all need to know that it is God alone who satisfies our deepest needs - nothing and nobody else can do that. And this book explains it all very clearly. Thank you, Andrea, for writing it.

“Brilliant book”

This is one of my favourite books about singleness and have read it a couple of times. It is practical about the hardships of being single, whilst also celebrating the joys. It focuses on Christ being all we need, and shows that our lives can be fulfilling and glorifying to him, whether we marry or not.
It also contained some amazing bits that made me rethink what I had been thinking about myself for many years. It is a brilliant book and would highly recommend it.

“A great book for anyone struggling with singleness!!”

I read this book when I was really struggling with the idea that singleness is a good gift from God. I found it helpful, real and applicable. What I loved the most about the book was that it helped me to see Jesus as the real deal and not the picture. Marriage is a wonderful gift but so is singleness and Andrea really helped me to embrace that! thank you so much! I recommend this book to every single woman out there.

“FANTASTIC book on contentment for every Christian”

Months later I can still remember things I that learnt from this book. I think the challenge to be contented is applicable to every Christian, this book deals with it in the context of singleness. So important for all Christian women to read to so they can understand & give godly advice and support to their sisters in Christ. I have given away several copies. Best book I have read on singleness. Great to have the testimonies of single women at different life stages.

“My Favorite Book on Singleness”

I am a 27 year-old single woman. I have read many books on singleness and this book is the best I have ever read. This is the book I recommend to all my single women friends who are struggling with being single and desiring marriage. The author speaks Biblical truth about contentment and singleness in a way that is easy to apply to your life. If you have a strong desire to marry, but are still single and struggling with contentment during this season of your life, I highly recommend this book.

“A Great book for ALL Women”

Andrea's practical, realistic approach to the different aspects of singleness and more generally being a woman, is thought provoking for all of us.
Throughout the book Andrea gives us examples of Gods living word and how that helps us to find contentment, as Paul did, in any situation. She explains how specific passages show Jesus great love for us, what he has done to make us his own, and how we need to allow our hearts to be captivated and full of him, rather than something or someone else. We can know he loves us not because he says he does but because of what he has already done for us.
However, as I said, Andrea’s approach is realistic, she recognises that this is easy to say but hard to apply, and she is not shy to use her own struggles to illustrate her points.
For me this book not only makes great reading and points us to Jesus but, in the busy lives that we all lead, helps me to be less self-interested and to appreciate the difficulties of others and their situations. She gives us practical points to enable us to support our friends, whether single or not, and to be considerate to their needs because of the love we have for Jesus in our hearts.

“One of the most joyful and honest books on singleness”

As soon as I started to read this book I felt as if Andrea was with me, talking and excuding her inimicable warmth, encouragement and friendliness all at the same time. The wonderful thing about Andrea is her capacity to provide support through her deep sense of joy, which undoubtedly stems from her deep sense of contentment and walk with Jesus as her Saviour and her Lord. Andrea writes with searing honesty about singleness, the struggles and the pain. By explaining how she responds from a gospel perspective, Andrea helps us to focus on our hearts. Do read this book as it will provide you with a very useful insight into one persons commitment to serve her Saviour in obedience and trust at whatever cost to herself.

“About Every Single Heart AND Hearts of Single people!”

I hate books on singleness...! but rather than making me feel guilty for struggling to be content in my singleness this book helped me to recognise, delight in and make the most of what I do have. Of who I have. A relationship that satisfies like no other. One with the living Lord Jesus.

“Absolutely brilliant! What a great read!!”

I though the heart of singleness was absolutely fantastic. Any woman who is struggling to enjoy her singleness or to see it as a gift will be thoroughly helped and encouraged by this book! Andrea is beautifully honest and open with her own struggles with her singleness but shows how through the Holy Spirit’s help and key scriptures she has learnt to be single and satisfied and really see her single state as a wonderful opportunity and blessing. She applies scriptures to the issue of singleness is refreshing, insightful ways. Her application of “the woman at the well” and “the prodigal son” are brilliant. What I loved most about the book was how it put singleness into eternal perspective through the light of the gospel. I recommend this book to all single women and am making it my book of the month (March 2014) on my blog www.rubyintherough.co.uk
