“Board book”

This was a simple read. My 1 year old liked flipping through the pages. He would sit and just flip through it a few times. The illustration is captivating. My 6 yr old kept yelling fire whenever we flipped to the fire page. It was fun To see how it drew his attention. This book didn’t have a lot of words so it was an easy read. My son was fascinated by the story. I like books that draws their attention to the Bible and the passages of scripture that helps them learn more about who God is.

Thank you Good Book Company for a Complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

“Little ones learn power of God”

A small board book just right for toddlers and young children's hands. This Bible story was a favorite of my children when they were young. I'm delighted to see it in a children's book so they can learn how the prophet Elijah stood up to the priests of Baal let God demonstrate His power and Supreme Being.

The fire from God to light the altar really gets the attention of story listeners and they learn how God won the "contest" against the other people's god, Baal.

I received a complimentary copy to facilitate a review. Opinions are mine, alone and are freely given.

“Simple & Sweet!”

This book is such a simplistic way of describing the story of Elijah and the power of God. I love the connection to Jesus and the connection of "God is the real God" to "Jesus is the real God".

Yesterday my son asked me to read this book roughly 17 times. He is 1.5 years old and really likes the "FIRE" page. This book is for ages 3-6, but I still like that he enjoys reading it and am excited for him to understand more fully when he's older.

“Perfect for 2 year olds”

I absolutely love the original version of this book, so I was excited to take a look at the board book version. I think it's a perfect adaptation if the big book for the toddler crowd (the intended audience). It's very much an abridged version, showing that the whole point of Elijah on mount Carmel was to show who the real God is, and later, Jesus would show that he was the true God incarnate through his life death and resurrection. Those are the key points of the story, and this board book hits all those. They are the exact points I hit with my 2 year old when abridging the original story to read with him (the original is pretty long for a short attention span). This board book version is the perfect size for a toddler, and would work fantastic in a 2 year-old Sunday school setting. I also love that the board book is so sturdy and durable. It communicates to littles that this story is for them too. And let's them engage with it as their fine motor skills are still being fine tuned, without destroying the book.

“It was an okay book, but felt it was missing much.”

This board book was okay, but I was wanting more. It is very simple and geared toward little ones. My son wasn't huge on this one and I would have loved a little more about Elijah, but I appreciated that it shows very young children that Jesus is God and very briefly introduces children to the story of Elijah which is not a typical story in children storybook bibles. I would have liked more about Elijah though and it was missing a lot from the Bible story. The illustrations are bright and fun. This was just not our personal favorite and it would have been great to see more of a gospel presentation in the book as well along with showing kids how the story of Elijah connects to Christ. Definitely felt like it was missing a lot.

“Sweet board book”

The God Contest tells the story of Elijah on Mount Carmel, how God showed everyone he was real by answering Elijah's prayer. I love how it connects the story to the gospel and how God also showed us he is real by sending his son, Jesus to earth. God has proved who he really is and this simple book can help you teach your toddler those truths early on. This board book is very engaging with simple text and fun illustrations! My 2 year old loves it!
This would be a great gift idea and would fit perfectly in a toddlers Easter basket!

“Toddler-Friendly Version of the Big Kids' Favorite”

It doesn't have all of the funny moments from the full version, but this book is just as full of rich truths from the Bible!

“Simplified Adaptation”

This is a board book adaptation of "The God Contest Storybook: The True Story of Elijah, Jesus, and the Greatest Victory." This board book is simplified and shorter for babies and toddlers, briefly presenting the biblical narrative about Elijah's showdown with the prophets of Baal. In addition to sanitizing some details from the true story, this book also cuts some dramatic details for the sake of time, while still presenting the main event and main message.

The adapted text from Carl Laferton is short and simple, with just one or two sentences per page, and the illustrations from Catalina Echeverri are colorful and dramatic. This book involves selected text and images from the original book, but it doesn't feel choppy and reads as a seamless whole. However, the part about Jesus at the end feels abrupt, and I wanted more explanation here. The book says that because God wants us to know for sure who He is, He did something even more amazing by sending Jesus. Although the original book explains parallels between the story of Elijah and the story of Jesus, building on the idea more, the connection in this shortened version feels forced and creates an abrupt ending.

This book will appeal to fans of the Tales That Tell the Truth series, and it is appropriate for families and church contexts. However, because this book simplifies the story so greatly and doesn't adequately explain the connection to Jesus at the end, I am less impressed with this than I have been with other board book adaptations from the main series. Although this book will serve people who are very invested in this series and want simplified versions for younger children, I would mainly recommend the original, longer book.

Note: I received a free copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

“Great Illustrations”

Just read this story in my Bible and it is fun to read it out loud to my toddler, complete with beautiful illustrations. It's a powerful story of God's glory. There of course is so much more to the surrounding story, but I was okay with just focusing on this "God Contest." I did feel like the ending was a little odd/ felt forced to make a connection of this OT story with Jesus. While Jesus is God and it is important to know that, it just felt unnatural to the storyline and makes the book read a bit off.
