What a great book for kids (and for the adults who read it to kids)! Alison has captured the journey of the anxious father, desperate to find Jesus for his dying son. The story turns on the words of Jesus, "GO your son will live!” Alison’s use of repetition in her story and Catalina’s beautiful illustrations work together to capture the heart of this story from John 4.

Wonderfully narrated and beautifully illustrated, The One O'clock Miracle is a compelling retelling of a famous Bible story of faith, grace and big, powerful words.

I have this theory that people are more open to truth when they are smiling than when they are frowning. And Catalina Echeverri’s illustrations for Tales that Tell the Truth just make me smile! They are bright and winsome and shot through with humour. Combined with texts that faithfully retell both individual Bible stories and God’s Big Story, they make for a winning series of picture books.

“Excellent book!”

(Review written for 'The One O'Clock Miracle Storybook')

I try and keep a copy of each of the books in this series, but since I work in children’s ministry frequently give them away to kids and parents! Excellent books to help kids engage with the true stories of the Bible, lovely and fun illustrations that don’t go too crazy with artistic liberty, and always think of this particular story in the Bible now as the one o’clock miracle.

“One of our all time favourites”

(Review written for 'The One O'Clock Miracle Storybook')

We collect the books in this series and this is one of our all time favourites! Even our 12 and 10 year old sit to join our 7 and 3 year old, listening to me read aloud. We bought the full size images too, so we could share our screen during a conference call and tell the story to our godchildren. We see this set of books as a tremendous investment in our children's understanding of who Jesus is what he came to do... and we won't stop collecting till they stop being written, no matter how big the children get!

“What a breath of fresh air! I am SO thankful to have discovered these books!!”

(Review written for 'The One O'Clock Miracle Storybook')

I stumbled across The Friend Who Forgives at my local bookstore yesterday & was absolutely THRILLED to discover it! I bought it, went home & looked up the illustrator, & after looking through them online, ordered 5 more of her books, including this one. I have been telling my friends & family about them & bought some as gifts as well. Why? Because I have never seen kids books that so clearly, creatively, & Biblically tell bible stories, while also accurately teaching the message of the story! (& I’ve seen lots!) The oldest of my 4 kids turned 4 this week & I am super thankful to have found these books in time to read over & over to my kids as they grow! THANK YOU!!!

“Brilliant!”

(Review written for 'The One O'Clock Miracle Storybook')

I bought this as a gift for my 21 month old goddaughter who loves it! The style of writing is spot on for little ones and really engages them with the story. The illustrations are extremely high quality and there's something new to point out each time. How wonderful to be able to provide a book for her that tells the truth of Jesus, not just moral stories of Piglet and Winnie the Pooh (however wonderful they may also be).

“Vivid and engaging pictures; great story telling; accurate in content; exuberantly happy in tone”

(Review written for 'The One O'Clock Miracle Storybook')

This is first class, one of the best children’s Bible stories I have ever read. The pictures are bright, vivid and engaging. The story builds to a beautiful climax and drives home the same point that I think John the Apostle was trying to make. (John was one of Jesus' friends and the man who first wrote down this story in the gospel of John.) The text is well written, with just the right amount of repetition to please a younger child, but not so much it gets annoying for the parent. The text is short enough on each page that the story moves along at a good pace. It has a bright joyful tone that gets across the central shock of the miracle..

My one gripe is that the map shows Cana as being south of Lake Galilee near the Jordan river. There are two possible sites for Cana; both are west of Galilee and nowhere near the Jordan river. Everything else is great: it correctly shows the terrain along the route as being hilly and it gets the length of journey about right.

I have two passionately engaged and very short literary critics in my family; the eldest is three and a half years old. They don't like everything, but they like this a lot. I don't like all children's Bible stories, but I like this a lot. I expect to read it many times over the next few years – and I expect to enjoy the experience.

[Full disclosure: I was given this copy by a rep from the company, slightly by accident but under no expectation of writing a review. It's so good I felt I should write a review, because I'm ordering another copy to give away and I think your children/grandchildren/godchildren will love it.]

Thanks for your review, Paul - I'm delighted that you like the story so much, and especially your comment that it "drives home the same point" that John is making in his Gospel. That's our aim with every book in the "Tales that tell the truth" series.

Thanks too for your comment about the precise location of Cana. You are right that, if this was an exact map, Cana would need to be more directly west of the Sea of Galilee. I hadn't noticed that the illustration had moved it further south, so I do apologise for that.

As I'm sure you're aware, there is a stylised element to the illustrations, such as the size of the pack the man starts off with, and the near-vertical hill he climbs on the page after the map, which aim to build up the main idea behind each story. This is something Catalina does brilliantly in her artwork, all of which adds to the huge reveal when "Jesus simply spoke". The pictures support the main Bible teaching, and keep the focus centred on the words of Jesus. But if we do include maps in future books in this series, we'll make sure to keep them as accurate as possible.

Thanks again for your feedback. Alison Mitchell
