Sinclair Ferguson knows how to write deep theology that helps simple people like me. And there is no deeper topic than the Advent of our glorious Lord in this broken world. The Dawn of Redeeming Grace is written by a wise author offering us rich insights, so that we journey more confidently from this world to that which is to come.

It is hard not to be a little envious of Sinclair’s uncanny knack of unpacking familiar material in a manner that causes one to say, ‘Why didn’t I see that?’ These short readings have helped me read my Bible with fresh insight, and in the process my heart has been strangely warmed.

“Rewarding and easy read”

(Review written for 'The Dawn of Redeeming Grace')

I bought the Dawn of Redeeming Grace for Advent but opened it early and have kept going because it is such a rewarding (yet easy) read. It joins up so many dots in getting behind the Biblical text. I love the way it incorporates the words of so many Christmas carols, helping to really get to and appreciate the meaning of those too. I'll read it again when Advent gets here!

“Addresses familiar stories in a new light”

(Review written for 'The Dawn of Redeeming Grace')

I have never used an Advent devotional because I assumed it would be hard for me to connect to such familiar stories in new ways. I was wrong! This devotional explores the common Advent stories in a fresh light.

“Simple, Gospel-Focused, and Accessible”

(Review written for 'The Dawn of Redeeming Grace')

This Advent devotional focuses on Matthew's account of the Nativity story. Sinclair B. Ferguson delves into both the popular and the difficult elements of these historical events, and throughout the book, he provides insight into God's work through the details of the narrative. The Dawn of Redeeming Grace: A Daily Advent Devotional has four parts, and each begins with a section of the biblical text. The following devotional readings focus on different elements of the story, and they are all short and accessible. Each one ends with lyrics to a Christmas hymn or a general hymn, and with an example prayer.

The Dawn of Redeeming Grace is great for Christians who are looking for an Advent devotional that is biblical, short, and simple to add to their daily routines. This book may also appeal to people who aren't Christians, but who want to better understand the story, and Ferguson sometimes writes directly to non-Christian readers, engaging with their concerns and sharing some of his own testimony. I would definitely recommend this to someone looking for a good book to read with a spiritually seeking friend around Christmastime.

I can't say that I learned anything new from this book, since it is a story that I have known all my life, but I appreciated Ferguson's clear, well-organized portrayal of the narrative and its main themes, and found it worshipful and encouraging. This is a great way for people to draw their minds to Christ as Christmas approaches, and the book is accessible for both adults and teens. This is a great choice for both individual reading and family devotions with older children.

“The Savior is Born”

(Review written for 'The Dawn of Redeeming Grace')

How can you meet Jesus during this Christmas? In the Dawn of Redeeming Grace, Sinclair B. Ferguson shares daily devotions for the advent season.

Timeless Truths

By walking through the first two chapters of the Gospel of Matthew, Ferguson writes conversationally and compellingly. As a Ligonier Teaching Fellow and Chancellor’s Professor of Systematic theology at Reformed Theological Seminary, his reflections are particularly insightful. I found new and timeless truths in this book.

The book is divided into four sections, examining different aspects of the Christmas story. In Part One: The Family History, the genealogy of Jesus is explained with Ferguson taking particular interest in why Matthew included it and why there was emphasis on the women in the lineage. In Part Two: The Family, Ferguson gives special attention to Joseph – thinking through his motives, what was running through his mind, and how we see that he was a faithful man of God.

The Savior is Born

In Part 3, The Visitors, the Wise Men are shown to have studied and acted upon the news of the birth of the Son of God. Part 4 looks at The Journeys of the Wise Men, Joseph, and Mary as the Christmas story gives way to the life of Jesus. There is excitement and expectancy as the God-child grows, and Jesus the Nazarene prepares to begin his ministry.

I loved how hymns and prayers are included with each reflection, giving this devotional a worshipful feel that is appropriate as we reflect on the newborn King. The Biblical text is also included at the beginning of each section, making this an all-in-one book for your personal morning devotions or evening family worship. My heart was eager to meet Jesus every day in these short readings. Christ the Savior is born.

I received a media copy of The Dawn of Redeeming Grace and this is my honest review.

“Points you to Christ and leads you to doxology!”

(Review written for 'The Dawn of Redeeming Grace')

The Dawn of Redeeming Grace: Daily Devotions for Advent follows Dr. Sinclair Fergusson’s 2018 release with the same theme, Love Came Down at Christmas. In this new devotional, he invites us to join him in walking through the first two chapters of the Gospel of Matthew to know more and worship the Promised King.

This book is composed of 24 devotionals divided into four parts designed for the four weeks of December that ultimately leads to Christmas day. Part One: The Family History traces the genealogy of Jesus as it is written in the Scriptures. Part Two: The Family focuses on the virgin conception, Joseph’s restraints, and the prophecy about the Messiah. Part Three: The Visitors retells the story of the wise men from the east as they seek the Lord. Lastly, Part Four: The Journeys highlights the family’s long journey out of Egypt, and the fulfillment of more prophecies.

Dr. Fergusson opens each part with a set of passages from the Gospel of Matthew. He then exegetes the texts into chapters that wonderfully tell the coming of the Messiah, the dawn of redeeming grace. He finally ends each devotional with a fitting Christmas hymn.

What I love most about these devotionals is that they are theologically deep yet very readable. Unlike other devotionals these days, the gospel message here is not watered-down. They point you to Christ and leads you to doxology, awe, and wonder. Dr. Fergusson also included a lot of historical trivia and facts as he exposits the Word—his beautiful way of telling the historicity of the Christmas story.

The Dawn of Redeeming Grace: Daily Devotions for Advent is just a short, small book but heavy-loaded with rich spiritual and theological reflections on the doctrine of the incarnation. I highly recommend this to be read with the whole family!

“Wonderful Devotional option for Advent”

(Review written for 'The Dawn of Redeeming Grace')

Ferguson created this book as a devotional for advent. He specifically utilizes Matthew 1 & 2 for the Christmas story.

He structures the book with an introduction and four parts that include twenty-four chapters, allowing the devotional to be read in concordance with the advent calendar.

- Part 1: The Family History

- Part 2: The Family

- Part 3: The Visitors

- Part 4: The Journeys

Each part begins with the specific Scripture reading from Matthew. Each chapter concludes with a hymn and a prayer.

The chapters go from encouraging, to truth filled, to insightful, to powerful, to convicting, and more. Not one day is like the other. Ferguson walks through Jesus' birth story as told by Matthew and utilizes other scripture references to bring further wisdom.

This is a wonderful devotional option for the advent season that will bring you to wonder and worship.

I received a copy of this book from The Good Book Company in exchange for an honest review.
